Maleeha Shahid
Regional Councillor, Deputy Mayor, Author, Leadership Coach
Maleeha Shahid is a public servant, leadership coach, artist, and author who has made history in the Town of Whitby. In 2018, she became the first woman of an ethnic background elected to Whitby Town Council. She was re elected as Regional Councillor in 2022 and, in 2023, became the first Muslim Deputy Mayor in Canadian history.
A Harvard certified leadership coach and graduate of Western University’s Local Government Program, Maleeha brings together academic insight and lived experience. As a longtime Whitby resident and Regional Councillor, she has championed inclusive growth, advocating for hospitals, community infrastructure, youth leadership, and policies that ensure diverse voices are reflected in local decision making.
Her work extends beyond council chambers. Maleeha has led and supported initiatives addressing Islamophobia, mental health, domestic violence, and human trafficking, while also advancing food security, cultural awareness, and fraud prevention programs for seniors. Across these efforts, her focus remains on equity, safety, and community well being.
Maleeha currently serves on multiple regional and municipal committees and advisory boards across Durham Region and the Town of Whitby, contributing to areas including accessibility, transit, economic development, anti racism, and active transportation.
Grounded in authenticity, compassion, and resilience, Maleeha’s leadership is shaped by both public service and personal experience. As a mother of three, she is deeply committed to building communities where people feel seen, supported, and safe. She also serves on the boards of Refugee Girls Worldwide and the Whitby Specialty Food Bank.
Today, Maleeha works with organizations and individuals through speaking, facilitation, and coaching, supporting leaders as they navigate complexity, responsibility, and change.
